[ EXTREMELY SORRY FOR THE INORDINATE DELAY. I HAD BEEN OUT OF REACH. …. MLS Shastry ]
The size of the swap area is set by the administrator during the time UNIX / Linux is loaded into the system. The administrator will probably take into consideration, the following values to come to a decision. ( In any case, the swap size, unless it is extremely small like a few MB or extremely large like a few GB, does not affect the system performance to any appreciable extent.
The actual size of the hard disk.
The actual size of the core memory.
The approximate number of processes that are expected to be run on the system.
Note that with the availability of demand paging, a swapped out process is normally NOT completely swapped IN, when it is to resume execution.
GENERAL OBSERVATION : Many of the doubts on the working of the operating system / the Compiler are automatically cleared as you proceed to the later Sessions in the course. In any case, the last section of Questions and Answers Audio should answer almost all doubts. One can listen to the answers even in the middle of the course provided one locates the exact Question in the QA section. You are advised to run through the 3 Question Banks to check if the doubt you have is covered by a Question.
